What is Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)?
What is CPT?
CPT is a talk therapy treatment for PTSD that helps people process trauma by learning to modify and challenge unhelpful beliefs related to the trauma. The idea is to teach clients how to challenge and reframe certain beliefs about the trauma in which they are feeling “stuck.” This is done by challenging and changing thoughts, and feelings to reduce the experience of the unwanted trauma symptoms and reactions. It has been shown to be a highly effective treatment for reducing the experience of uncomfortable PTSD symptoms over the course of treatment to promote improved function in daily life.
Who is it for?
CPT is for anyone experiencing symptoms of PTSD after a traumatic event. The traumatic event can include one or more events of abuse, assault, combat, rape and/or natural disasters. Survivors of these traumatic events often experience PTSD symptoms and would benefit from therapeutic intervention, even if treatment begins years after the traumatic event.
How long is the treatment?
CPT is a structured therapy that is usually completed in 12 sessions. Ideally, the sessions are 1 hour, twice per week for optimal results.
CPT is one of several available treatments that have been shown to reduce symptoms of PTSD.
