Who Would Benefit From a Home Safety Assessment?

As we move through different stages of life, our ability to manage daily activities may change. Whether it's due to aging, health challenges, or temporary conditions, navigating our home safety can become quite difficult. During a home safety assessment, an occupational therapist will consider your ability to participate in daily tasks within your home, providing valuable insight and solutions to make your space more comfortable and functional. Recommendations are made to modify your environment, allowing you to feel safer, more confident, and increase your independence.

Who Can Benefit?

A home safety assessment can be incredibly helpful for a wide range of people, particularly those facing challenges in their current living space or those who want to “age in place” without the fear of potential accidents. Examples of some specific groups that would benefit from this evaluation include:

1. Older Adults at Risk for Falls.

Falls are one of the leading causes of injury in older adults and the things increasing your risk may not be easily identified. A home safety assessment can determine the factors that might pose as a potential danger, allowing them to make the beneficial adjustments needed.

2. Individuals With Mobility Limitations.

Those with mobility aids such as walkers, wheelchairs, or canes may find it difficult to navigate certain areas of their homes. By requesting an assessment, these spaces can be adjusted to make movement easier and safer.

3. People With Cognitive Impairments.

Cognitive issues like memory loss, dementia, or Alzheimer’s can pose significant safety risks within the home. By contacting an OT, tools and systems can be put into place to minimize the risk of accidents, while ensuring essential items remain easily accessible.

4. Those With Visual Impairments.

Adjusting lighting and organizing spaces to reduce hazards can create a safer and more manageable living environment.

5. Individuals Preparing for Discharge From the Hospital.

After surgery or a hospital stay, your home environment may need modifications to ensure a smooth recovery. A home safety assessment can make the transition back home easier and safer.

6. Anyone Lacking Confidence in Their Home’s Safety.

If you feel uneasy managing daily tasks at home, whether it’s cooking, bathing, or getting around, then a home safety assessment could put your mind at ease. Taking proactive steps to ensure your home is safe will allow you to continue living independently and with confidence.
