Tips to Help Cope with Loneliness in Winter
The winter months bring up feelings of loneliness for many people. The shorter days, longer nights and cold weather lessen opportunities to get out of the house and socialize with friends and family. It’s normal to be feeling lonely and isolated during these difficult months. However, frequent feelings of loneliness are shown to be associated with mental health problems such as depression, anxiety, and increased stress.
Here are some tips to help cope with feelings of loneliness:
Plan chats with your family and friends over the phone or video calls
Join a group or class based on your hobbies and interests
Practice self-care - get adequate rest, spend time exercising, and eat healthy meals
Try to get some sunlight. Spending time outdoors can be beneficial for your mood.
Create a comforting space. Turn your home into a place you enjoy spending time! This can be as simple as using scented candles to relax or getting a new cozy blanket.
Talk with a therapist. Feeling lonely can be very difficult, talking your feelings through may be a helpful option. Ask for help if you need it.
