Occupational Therapists’ Role in Mental Health

Occupational Therapists play an essential role in addressing mental health and well-being at every point in mental health care and within a variety of settings such as hospitals, workplaces, homes, and communities. In fact, OTs are one of the regulated healthcare professionals that are qualified to be psychotherapists. 

OTs, understand the impact that mental health issues can have on the ability to manage day-to-day life, maintain relationships, and participate in meaningful activities. They use a unique and holistic approach to support individuals in addressing the functional challenges in their lives in addition to their mental health challenges.  

OTs have the knowledge and skills to assist with managing mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, and addictions. Some ways OTs can help address mental health include: 

  • Providing education. Educating others on symptoms of their mental illness and how it may be impacting their daily life. 

  • Identifying triggers and developing coping strategies. 

  • Improving self-esteem and developing helpful thinking patterns. 

  • Establishing healthy habits and routines.

  • Providing counseling and psychotherapy services to support clients struggling with mental health.
