Trauma Responses in the Nervous System
When we encounter dangerous situations, our nervous system reacts with a flight, flight or freeze response.
Experiencing trauma can have a significant effect on this response. When a traumatic event occurs, our nervous system can be pushed beyond its limits and make it difficult to regulate itself. Our system can become increasingly sensitive and interpret more cues in one’s environment as dangerous. For instance, changes in facial expressions and tone of voice can be perceived as dangerous causing one to experience symptoms such as an increased heart rate and sweating.
For some, trauma can cause the nervous system to become stuck “on.” This can look like one being overstimulated, and experiencing increased anxiety, panic, restlessness, and hyperactivity. On the other hand, the nervous system can be stuck on “off.” This may look like symptoms of depression, fatigue, disconnection, and lethargy.
Grounding techniques can be used to help regulate the nervous system again. Bringing your awareness back to your body can help you learn more about the physiological changes that occur in response to stress and triggers to assist with managing these responses.
